1 Million Signature Campaign - Maternity Leave in Malaysia

Files under News | 1 Comment

Dear mommies,

Maternity Leave in Malaysia is 60-days. Is this enough??

The National Union of Bank Employees (Nube) has launched a campaign on March 8 to collect one million signatures in support of its proposal to provide longer maternity leave for women employees in the country.

Its general secretary, J. Solomon, said the campaign, in conjunction with the International Women’s day celebration, was aimed at getting the government to amend the Employment Act 1955 to increase the maternity leave from 60 days to 90 days in line with the practice in other Asean countries.

He said Nube would also invite trade unionists, representatives from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and womens’ organisations, medical professionals, academicians, relevant government agencies and the media for various programmes during the campaign period.

He said Nube believed that an increased entitlement would be the greatest gift to Malaysia’s 5.1 million women employees from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who had been sympathetic to the weaker and underprivileged groups in promoting his 1Malaysia concept.

Statutory maternity leave in Southeast Asia:

Singapore – 112 days (16 weeks)
Thailand – 90 days (3 months)
Cambodia – 90 days
Indonesia – 90 days
Malaysia – 60 days

Some Southeast Asian countries even provide breastfeeding and child care protection. For example a mother in Singapore gets up to 12 months leave to breastfeed and care for her newborn. In Cambodia, companies are obliged to grant a new mother a 30-minute break twice daily to breastfeed her child. Those with more than 100 women workers have to provide nursing rooms and day care centers, with the cost of childcare borne by the company. Indonesian employers meanwhile are required to provide a suitable place for breastfeeding mothers to nurse their children during work hours.

These are but some of the instances of protection for women workers afforded under the ILO convention.

Malaysia, unfortunately, is lagging far behind and there is a pressing need to amend the relevant provision in the Employment Act 1955.

The 60-day paid maternity leave is simply not enough for most Malaysian women.

Why?   A women who goes through the delivery of a child suffers not just physically but emotionally and mental too.

Collection of signatures in support of this petition will end on 6th June 2010.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Do you know October is the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month - the “Pink Ribbon” month?

The  Estée Lauder Group of Companies Malaysia has been actively promoting early detection of breast cancer since 1997. In the last 12 years, more than half a million Breast Self Examination (BSE) instructional cards and pink ribbons have been distributed by the company. Wow! The beneficial cause has raised a whopping RM1.2mil for the Breast Cancer Welfare Association, College Of Radiology Malaysia, National Cancer Society and most recently, the Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation.

There are many activities lined up for the Estée Lauder Companies Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign in Malaysia this year. Please check out the calendar at:

http://www.esteelaudermalaysia.com/bca09/calendar.html

The illuminated KL Tower is Estee Lauder Companies' bid in sending out a strong message on breast cancer awareness.

In this October, the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a new epidemiological study suggests that physical activity may reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Many women including many breast cancer survivors walked to streets to raise breast cancer awareness this month. Walking occasionally may be better than nothing, but regular physical activity could be more beneficial, according to the study.

The new study published in the Jul-Sept 2009 issue of Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention found women doing a job that required them to stand or move most of time in a day were 34 percent less likely to contract breast cancer than those spending most of their time sitting.

Breaking News - Worst dengue outbreak

Files under News | 1 Comment

Check out the following dengue news in Malaysia:

Jan 31, 2009 - PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is going through its worst dengue outbreak ever, health officials said yesterday, with higher rainfall and public apathy being blamed for encouraging the widespread breeding of the Aedes mosquito.

In the first 28 days of this year alone, 14 people have died and 5,062 dengue cases have been recorded. This compares with five deaths and 2,855 cases in the same period last year.

The biggest increases in the number of dengue cases were seen in Perlis, Sabah, Kelantan, Penang, Pahang, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Sarawak, Terengganu, Johor, Perak and Kedah.

For details, please view source at http://www.straitstimes.com

The Malaysian government has launched a dengue awareness campaign in response to the rising number of dengue cases.

Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said it was not the time to point fingers but to get to the ground and tackle the scourge.

Expressing concern over the situation, Health Ministry Director-General Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said the ministry was discovering more unusual symptoms in the more severe cases category.

Usually in severe dengue cases, patients would suffer from bleeding and low platelet count, he said.

However, there were cases where the brain was affected and people can come down with epileptic attack, jaundice, hepatitis and even kidney or liver failure, he said.

As a precautionary measure, the ministry had directed all doctors to add dengue testing if patients were showing high fever and unusual symptoms, especially if the patients were from areas where the incidence of dengue was high.

With the current dengue outbreak in Kuala Lumpur & Selangor, are you worry for your pregnancy & your baby?

“Housewife Fairus, 25, who was seven months pregnant with the couple’s first child, died at the Penang Hospital at 6am on Saturday due to dengue haemorrhagic fever. The foetus also did not survive. …. September 26, 2005 The Star”

Toh said she took her baby to a clinic when the child became feverish last Thursday. She added that when the fever did not go down the next day, she rushed the baby to a private hospital. “My baby was not admitted that day. Three days later, she suddenly turned blue and had difficulty breathing,” Toh said yesterday. “I took her to the same hospital again but she died a few hours later.” … November 05, 2005 The Star.

We’ll talk about more on next post regarding dengue mosquito, dengue fever symptoms, how to protect your baby from mosquitoes etc.
